Ink Wash Sumi-e
Sumi-e brushwork — confident single-stroke gestures, dry-brush texture and generous negative space.
Ink Wash Sumi-e reproduces East-Asian ink painting: economical brushstrokes that describe a subject in as few marks as possible, graded washes from bone-dry scratch to saturated black, and the deliberate emptiness (yohaku) that gives the form room to breathe. It reads as painted, not filtered.
This is a LoRA adapter, not a standalone model. Load it on top of a compatible
wan 2.1base checkpoint — it will not generate on its own.

Uses
Direct use. Editorial illustration, book and album art, and any composition that benefits from restraint and a single strong gesture.
Out of scope. Colour-rich or photoreal work — this is a monochrome ink adapter and will strip most colour prompts to greys.
How to use
Load the adapter over your wan 2.1 checkpoint, then trigger with: sumi-e, ink wash
sumi-e, ink wash, a single crane taking flight, dry-brush reeds, wide negative space, unsized rice paper, minimal composition
Recommended LoRA weight 0.75. 0.75 keeps the paper visible and the strokes loose; higher and the washes flood, filling the negative space the style depends on.
- Works well for — single-subject nature studies (birds, bamboo, mountains); minimalist editorial art; brush-lettering-adjacent layouts.
- Not suitable for — busy multi-subject scenes; anything needing accurate colour.

Training details
140 photographs of original ink paintings on washi, contributed by two practising sumi-e artists and used with written permission. Scans were kept at full tonal range so the dry-brush texture survived.
Procedure. Trained as a low-rank adapter over wan 2.1 at ranks 32 and 64, fp16, batch size 4, cosine LR with a short warmup. Captions were written by hand so the trigger words map cleanly onto the intended look.
Bias, risks and limitations
- Colour prompts mostly fail — this is a monochrome adapter by design.
- Complex scenes lose the discipline of the style and turn muddy.
- Occasionally invents 'signature' seals that are not real characters; crop them if literal text matters.
License & provenance
Trained on artist-contributed ink paintings, used with permission. Purchasing the commercial offer ($189.00) grants a commercial redistribution license for outputs; the personal offer ($43.00) is for non-commercial use. The adapter weights may not be resold or re-uploaded.
